Mike Colameco's Real Food RUSS & DAUGHTERS
Russ & Daughters:
Well really, what more needs to be said. In business for 110 years and still run by the same family. We filmed this in 2007 and two years later in 2009 fourth generation first cousins, Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper took the reins from Niki’s father Mark.
Now they've expanded with a café on Orchard street, multiple locations in Manhattan and their own commissary bakery and shop in Brooklyn and still the best spot for smoked fish, pickled and cured herring, chopped liver, caviar, bagels, and all things appetizing.

Mike Colameco's Real Food BALTHAZAR & MINETTA TAVERN
Переглядів 7 тис.2 місяці тому
Few if any NYC restaurateurs can match the success rate, productivity and longevity of Keith McNally. Do the math, starting with the legendary Odeon in 1980, followed by Cafe Luxembourg in '83, then Nell's, Lucky Strike, Pravda, Balthazar, Pastis, Shillers, Morandi, and Minetta Tavern. They all share in serving really solid food, obsessively great design and lighting and furnished with antiques...

NYC circa 2005 and Chef Zak Pelaccio is coming off his successful run at the quirky Chickenbone Cafe in South Williamsburg to open Fatty Crab on Hudson St in the West Village. Zak had lived and eaten his way through Malaysia with his then wife Ana Jovancicevic who was stationed there with a corporate gig. She suggested the concept to him as no one else was doing "rock and roll Malay street food...

Mike Colameco's Real Food WD-50 / Chef Wylie Dufresne with Alex Stupak on Pastry
Переглядів 3,4 тис.3 місяці тому
To say that Chef Wylie DuFresne's WD-50 was way ahead of its time would be a serious understatement. Opened on a bleak stretch of Clinton Street in 2003 on the far eastern reaches of the Lower East Side, it was an incubator for Modernist Cuisine and a magnet for NYC kitchen talent. It received a Michelin Star in 2006 and made San Pelligrino's global Best 50 list as well. In 2014 the restaurant ...

BOQUERIA / SUBA Chef Seamus Mullen and business partner Yann DeRochefort took Manhattan by storm with Boqueria, Seamus's Spanish Inspired Tapas Bar and Restaurant. Seamus now has multiple Manhattan Boqueria locations. They also ran SUBA together, a lovely mostly subterranean Spanish spot on Ludlow just north of Houston St. years before that stretch of the LES would blossom as a thriving restaur...

Sorella / The Meatball Shop: For six years Chef Emma Hearst and Managing partner Sarah Krathen ran this lovely Italianish spot on what was back then a very dicey mixed use stretch of The Lower East Side on Allen St a few doors down from a tire repair shop. Next store they had a tiny gelateria called Stellina. Native New Yorkers and friends since their childhoods growing up on The Upper East Sid...

Savoy / Chef Peter Hoffman: For over twenty years Chef Peter Hoffman ran Savoy at the corner of Prince and Crosby in a rapidly gentrifying SoHo. He was a farmers market fixture, regularly seen shopping with his utility bicycle at the Union Square Greenmarket and doing seasonal cooking with locally grown ingredients way before "Farm to Table" became a thing. His recent memoir "What's Good?" chro...

Sea Grill / Oceanna: For the biggest city in America, basically an island surrounded by water, you'd think NYC would have more seafood restaurants. We'll, here's a look back at two very good ones, just a few blocks from each other in midtown that were excellent examples of the genre back in the 'aughts.

John Ozersky, the mid 'aughts and the early NYC BBQ scene: BBQ was still very much a new and emerging trend back in the mid 2000's in NYC due to a variety of reasons not least among them were Manhattan's air quality zoning laws covering wood smoke as air pollution. For this show I tapped a young journalist I knew at the time, Josh Ozersky, AKA Mister Cutlets, for his first ever television appea...

Keens / BLT Prime: Keens has been one of the best Steakhouses on the planet with longtime Chef William Rogers at the helm. Everything on the menu is great, they buy the best ingredients, the dining rooms dating back to the late 1800's are classic and they know how to cook. BLT Prime reminded me of CraftSteak at the time. It's what happens when a very talented Chef, in this case Chef Laurent Tou...
